How to book

To book or make an enquiry, use the contact form on this website to tell us what you are interested in doing. Alternatively you can call Steve Miller, owner of linesonthemap, on 07800 804822 for a chat at any time.

Once we have agreed on your hike we’ll confirm the date, and also send you a booking form and clarification of the total amount payable. In the booking form we will ask you about any pre-existing medical conditions. The information you provide to us will be held in confidence by linesonthemap. It is essential that we are made aware of any medical issues.

We will also send you full details of where to meet, route information, etc.

A deposit of £30 (or £25, i.e. the total cost, if on an 'Easy' graded route with seven people or more) is required to guarantee your hike. Please return the booking form to us along with your deposit. Payment can be made by BACS, credit/debit card online, or personal cheque. The deposit is non-refundable unless linesonthemap has to cancel the hike.*

The balance must be paid no later than 14 days in advance of the date of the hike.

* See ‘Cancellation’ section below

Our prices are shown along with route information for each of our set hiking routes – see the detailed area pages for cost details. Longer or more challenging routes are of course more highly priced. The bigger the group, the lower the cost per person.

If you decide on a bespoke hike with us (i.e. a hike other than one of the ‘set routes’ in our Hiking section) we will discuss prices and agree them with you either by phone or email when sending the booking form.

Unfortunately we cannot arrange transport for you so you will need to do this yourself, and meet Steve or one of our other guides at the designated meeting point. You are also responsible for your transport at the end of the hike.

Cancellation and curtailment

If you cancel more than 28 days in advance, you will be refunded all monies paid in full.

If you cancel 28 to 15 days inclusive in advance, you will forfeit your deposit but the remaining balance will be refunded to you (if you have paid it).

If you cancel 14 days inclusive in advance or later than this, no refunds can be made.

If we need to cancel your hike in advance for any reason other than adverse weather, you will receive a full refund of all money paid. Under no circumstances can we be held liable for additional costs such as client accommodation or transport – for this reason we encourage you to take out appropriate insurance (see ‘Risk statement’ section).

linesonthemap reserves the right to withdraw or modify arrangements for reasons of adverse weather, group preparedness in terms of clothing or equipment, or group/individual preparedness in terms of fitness, as follows.

The weather in the mountains can be unpredictable. If the weather is bad on the day we reserve the right to suggest another more suitable route in advance. You are free to accept or reject this alternative. If you decide not to go ahead, you will receive a full refund.

If the weather worsens after setting off and your guide makes the decision that it is necessary to curtail the hike, no refunds can be made. It is important to appreciate that although we will always plan for the forecasted weather, and exercise professional judgement in route choice, curtailment of a trek due to bad weather is a possibility (see ‘Risk statement and insurance’ below). This however is a very rare occurrence.

If the weather is less than ideal but we judge it suitable to proceed - and you decide not to undertake the hike (or to curtail it) - this will be treated as a cancellation. As such, no refunds can be made.

Clothing, equipment, food and drink

It is important that you bring suitable clothing and equipment, food and drink  – please see our Kit list page. linesonthemap reserves the right to cancel or curtail hikes if we feel that you are not sufficiently prepared in terms of clothing, food and drink.

We want you to enjoy your hike, and when you first contact us we will discuss the level of challenge with you. Our three grades – Easy, Moderate, Challenging – are designed to help you choose something that is suitable for your level of fitness. We reserve the right to modify the hike if we feel that the level of fitness required does not match your level.

Risk statement and insurance

Our guides are professionally trained to Summer Mountain Leader standard as a minimum, and will always act to minimise risk and ensure an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

However, hiking in the mountains is an activity that includes an unavoidable element of risk that cannot be entirely eliminated. By booking with us, you are confirming your awareness and acceptance of this risk and confirming that you are responsible for your own actions and involvement.

We encourage all our clients to take out appropriate insurance to cover the costs associated with unforeseen cancellation (such as transport and accommodation), as well as personal injury. All of our guides are fully insured for their professional activities.

The judgement of our guides is final – any decisions they make will be in the best interests of your safety and enjoyment.
